India: 10-day festival

Durga, the goddess of mothers, is honored each October during the 10-day Durga Puja festival. This event is thought to have originated in the 16th century and is both a religious ceremony and a time for family reunions.

Durga is said to have returned to her parent’s house to show off her own children. Nowadays, families prepare food, collect gifts, and decorate their homes for the festival for weeks. Today, you can visit other moms you know and maybe bring home-cooked treats to share.
