United Kingdom: A church custom
The fourth Sunday of Lent is “Mothering Sunday.” Young house servants returned home to spend time with their mothers on this day in the 1700s; this custom evolved from an earlier one in which relocated families would return to their original church.

Today, the holiday is still religious, with many churches handing out daffodils for kids to give to moms and girls traditionally baking a fruitcake for their mothers. Honor your mom by starting a new tradition inspired by one from your childhood.
